Yay. Ok, so no one at my school has read this amazing work of literature. Where do you start with this book? It's so powerful and magnificent that words can not really explain it. My friends ask me what the book is about, and it would take hours to fully explain it, then again, my friends didn't read The Lord Of The Rings which I don't understand how someone could not read the book! It too was so amazing!

Anywho, back to the Silmarillion. I think my favorite chapter would have to be Of Baren And Lúthien. Anyway, I'm glad to FINALLY talk to some other Tolkien fans. So many people at my school won't read his books because he goes into "too much detail." All I can say to that is that Tolkien is a genius.

I totally agree ;)

Beren and Luthien, a wonderful tale i have read many times! A tale with a happy ending, i simply love the idea of their love and ventures being rewarded with another life to live with eachother in the world once more. :)

Far unlike the tale of woe concerning Turin and Niniel/Nienor! But equally a masterpiece.

Back to Beren and Luthien, i have always been intrigued by Doriath and the Elfs in their mighty days, and was definately interested when i first picked up the book. Did you enjoy the story of Turin?

I loved that story as well. So much in fact that I did not want it to end, just to keep going on. I have to admit though, the changing of everyone's names was a bit confusing to me, I used the index of names and the family tree diagrams in the back a lot.

If I remember right, Túrin and Nienor were brother and sister, which suprised me that something like that would be in a book. I have to admit that I told my sister and she also thought that it seemed odd (Though she is no where as big a Tolkien fan as I). But then it did not matter for I got so involved in the book that Tolkien could have put more outragious things in and I wouldn't have even thought to question it. The story made me want to cry (Which I don't do often while reading books).

If I had more time, I would go into more detail and questions, but I must read the read the rest of the posts on the board. lol. I have to go to school in 15 minutes. I don't want to go. lol. I could talk about the Silmarillion all day.

It is a great book, reinforced with the book 'Unfinished Tales' if you havent read it i would advise you do, it re-tells certain parts of the silmarillion but in more detail, but also it has other stories, like that of Celeborn and Galadriel, Christopher Tolkien makes notes on certain parts, as the stories sometimes evolve and different ways and makes it unclear to reader, e.g. originally tolkien made Galadriel have a son, called Amroth, but later decided that she would only have Celebrian.

Anyway, there is more stories, that of Cirion and Eorl and the relationship of rohan and gondor.

And yes, in response to the whole 'brother and sister' 'Turin and Nienor' thing, i thought slightly strange at first, but eventually it seemed fitting for the tale, because of the curse of Morgoth upon hurin, so i think tolkien thought of different tragedies that could befall Turin and i think succeeds in making the reader have a sense of pity for Turin. Then Nienor's phrase when she thinks Turin is dead, 'Twice Beloved', was i think a good way of putting it.

Well, looking back at this message i think i have babbled enough lol

I have not had the pleasure of reading the book, but I heard of the tales of Beren and Luthien in the Lord Of The Rings books, also Aragorn mentions it at the Bridge-Water marshes on the fellowship of the ring film

I haven't read the Unfinnished Tales yet. I am currently reading The Book of Lost Tales Part 1 which also has commentary by Christopher Tolkien. Although I can already tell this is going to be a busy year and I may not have much time to read, I do have a study hall first hour which allows me to catch up.

lol, well when you have time, read also 'The Lays of Beleriand' if you like the tale of Turin, and of Beren and Luthien. ;)

My plan is to read all books on Middle-Earth but that may take a while as there are a lot more than I thought there were.

I thought that there was The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, and that was it... Until I went to the book store and they had an entire shelf set aside for Tolkien! I was like, I want that one and that one and that one...
